RGB vs RGBW permanent lighting
RGB lights mix red, green and blue to make their colours — including a white that is really three colours pretending. RGBW adds a fourth, dedicated white LED. For permanent lighting, where the system spends most of its life in white, that fourth channel is usually the difference a customer can see from the street.
The short answer
Choose RGBW when the system will be used as everyday architectural lighting — warm white most nights, colour for occasions. The dedicated white LED renders cleaner, warmer whites than an RGB mix. RGB alone suits budgets and uses that are genuinely colour-first, where white is occasional.
Why mixed white looks different
Three coloured LEDs at full power do produce white light, but it tends toward a cool, slightly tinted white, and warm tones are hard to reach convincingly. A dedicated white die is built to produce white — so fascia lighting reads like intentional architectural lighting rather than like holiday lights left on.
What it means on the roofline
- Everyday elegance — most permanent lighting systems run white far more nights than colour. That's the channel worth buying quality in.
- Colour is unaffected — reds, greens, blues and mixed scenes look equally vivid on both.
- Whites plus colour together — RGBW scenes can blend white with colour (white with warm accents, candy-cane with true white) that RGB can only approximate.
